I’m disgusted by the behaviour of some people over the whole John Sergeant controversy on Strictly Come Dancing.
I watch this series on and off because, while I love watching dancing, I am not really interested in watching z-listers trying to desperately win public support to help bolster their careers. I prefer to watch dance programmes like Dirty Dancing: Time of your life or Strictly Dance Fever or Dance X, where the competition is between people who actually love dancing and have worked hard to be the best at it because of their enjoyment of it.
No one – no judge, no member of the public, no contestant – can dare say that John Sergeant should not be on Strictly Come Dancing. Why? Because it is not about the dancing. If it was, you would not have contestants that have already had dance training competing against those that have not. How is that fair? There is no reputable competition that allows that. Therefore Strictly cannot be considered as a proper competition! It is nothing like X-Factor or any of the programs I’ve mentioned above, which at least offers the winner a life changing opportunity that they will appreciate and will kick start their careers as singers/dancers.
It is more like an entertainment show or a popularity contest (much like I’m A Celeb), and how the majority of the public spend their money voting is down to them. It is not for the judges to say he should be out – fair enough his dancing is poorer than the rest of them, but just comment on his dancing and leave it at that.
I was listening to Capital Radio this morning and they were discussing it and Lisa Snowden (who is a contestant on the show) and she was saying ‘I don’t think it’s because he doesn’t try as hard but he’s just not able to do all the things the rest of us is able to’. How conceited! Is she aware that not everyone on the show didn’t have her private performing arts school training? Does this mean that they shouldn’t go on the show if they can’t do what everyone else is able to? Speak to the BBC love, don’t blame the public for voting! And then Johnny Vaughn was sharing his opinion on how he would have quit, but since he was completely adamant about not going on the show in first place, keep that opinion to yourself. Why should John care if he messes up a show that has been completely rude and ungracious about his participation?
Get a grip people. entertainment shows are what it says on the tin – entertainment.
